Jumping into 2021

I have been skiing since I was 3, when my father brought my first wooden skis and leather ski boots to me. Immediately I rushed to a nearby hill, where I enjoyed myself thoroughly. Looking back today, it seems like there was a ton of snow every winter.

In this year’s winter season an image of my youth reappeared. With that in mind I had many trips to local skiing locations Trije kralji and Jurgovo, which are in our county. Like it was in my youth, I would take my touring skis and head to the top of ski resorts and enjoy the freshly fallen snow. Due to covid restrictions I spent the new year at home. Right after the first time it snowed I rushed into the Alps.

Me and my fellow mountain guide Milan Romih are headed towards Logarska valley. Fog clouds dissipate in front of Ljubno and amidst the greyness we see Raduha, lit by the sun. Because of a severe danger of avalanches (level 3), we decide to ascend onto Raduha. At the parking lot we meet some acquaintances of ours from Luče, Žiga and Duš Debelak. Together we head towards Raduha. At 1400 meters above sea level the fog dissipates and a winter wonderland appears in front of our eyes. The higher we are, the prettier the views. Before we make it to the top, we decide to do a warm-up descent due to the ideal snow conditions. After that we reapply our skins and in no time we are at Durce. A little further and we are at the ridge. A view of Podževalka, Ojstrica, Olševo and Peco unfolds. Underneath us we see a sea of sun lit pine trees.

Quickly we put on our skis and head off in search of ideal passes in the south faces of Raduha. In this area there are a lot of karst traps, which can lead you into risky situations, to say the least. A local Uroš and my friend Duš find an ideal way into the valley.

We don’t lose it even in the bottom section, where we find ourselves engulfed in fog. What follows is slightly worse conditions in the upper parts of the forest and making our way through a frozen path in the bottom part. Finally, we make our way through a snowy field near our parking lot. Our jump into 2021 was unforgettable.
