Turska mountain

Last week I got asked to guide onto Turska mountain. Matevž Vršnik made the final agreements with a guest of his residencies in Roban’s nook, to meet at Rogovilec pred Solčavo at 6:30.

Rinka Fall

A bit after 7:00 we were already headed towards the Rinka waterfall, which stands at the end of the mighty Logarska valley. Considering it was tourist season, there weren’t very many other people hiking near us. At the source of the Savinja river we filled our bottles up with crystal clear water and soon after we were already on Okrešelj. There, they are building a new hiking rest, since the old one sadly got ruined in a fire last fall. The sky was filled with clouds. This was very lucky for us, since we had to go up the southeastern faces of the mighty Turska mountain. The temperature was ideal for ascent. At about half way to the gutter the first big projectile which was caused by an irresponsible hiker, flew towards us. It almost hit a hiker, going up the curvy path, just a hundred meters below us. We were making good progress and were already in the gutter, where we now had to secure ourselves with ropes. What followed was quite a lengthy ferrata on very crunchy ground. We stepped with great caution over the many rocks, which soon rolled into the valley. Once we were attached to the cable, the path got safer right up until the upper end of the gutter, where steep crunchy rock makes your path difficult, at least until you cross right against the gap which leads you towards the southern faces of the mountain.

With that there was about 200 vertical meters to the top. The clouds blew over, so we had a fantastic view of the peaks of the Kamniško-Savinjske alps.

After some food we decided to descend on the same path and with that we began going towards the Turški gutter. Our descent on the feratta was faster than our ascent, and with that we were off to the curvy road towards Okrešelj. Luckily there weren’t many hikers descending on the gutter, so we were safe from rocky projectiles, which could have been deadly. Anyone should be aware of that, if they are going to go into an objectively dangerous gutter like this alone. Without the proper experience and skills it can indeed be deadly. Especially without the right equipment (helmet, gloves, etc.).

We ended our hike on a high note with a cold drink below the Rinka waterfall. Logarska valley reminded me once again, how beautiful this land I live in truly is. I love the Logarska valley and my homeland.
